‘Assassins Creed: Mirage’ to include full Arabic voiceover and subtitles

By Tom Aurelius

A new trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, debuted at Gamescom in Germany this week. The game is based in 9th century Baghdad, and the trailer introduces the newest character within the franchise.

Players take on the role of Basim Ibn Is’haq, a teenage robber with a murky history who teams up with the ‘Hidden Ones in Alamut’.

A Global first

Game publishers Ubisoft previously announced that Assassins Creed: Mirage would receive an Arabic dub in September 2022, however this is the first time the language has actually been heard in the game. Assassin’s Creed 2 has an Italian dub, and Assassin’s Creed: Unity can be played in French, so this isn’t the first time Ubisoft has included other language options for the series – however, this is first time that a language (other than English) has been heard in a main trailer.

Since Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is the first Assassin’s Creed game to be released internationally with full Arabic localization (including text and voice), Basim will be voiced by two excellent voice actors: Lee Madjoub for the English version and Eyad Nassar for the Arabic version.

“If you’re watching [Gamescom live stream] you may have noticed that the [Assassin’s Creed: Mirage] trailer was aired live in Arabic dubbing!” said Malek Teffaha, senior manager at Ubisoft responsible for accessibility, diversity, and inclusion.

“I believe it’s a first at a global conference like this. Eyad Nassar does an incredible job bringing Basim to life in Arabic. I was shaking and so emotional watching this. Holding back screams and tears. So so so proud of the kick*** effort going into this game … authenticity turned to 100!”

Taking realistic gaming to a whole new level

The visual and vocal portrayal of Basim are superb, making Ubisoft’s depiction of Baghdad feel lively and accurate. The realistic Arabic voiceover in Assassin’s Creed: Mirage works beautifully with the game’s setting and characters, and the game has recently received accolades for its faithful depiction of the Islamic call to prayer, one of the most essential components of religion for Muslims.

For games with a heavy emphasis on story, it will be extremely worthwhile for non-Arabic speakers to make the effort to play in the game’s native language (with subtitles, of course), in order to enhance the overall experience of the game and fully immerse themselves in to the storyline.

When will the game be released?

Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is due to be released on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, PC and Amazon Luna on October 5th 2023 – mark your calendars, this is not one to miss.
