Moana 2 – Meet the Voice Actors

By Matinée Multilingual

It has been eight years since Moana first hit screens worldwide and this month, its much-anticipated sequel will be released soon in UK cinemas. Tight-lipped about what is in store for viewers, Disney has said the animated film further explores the journey of Moana and her group of friends as they travel across the ocean, confront old and new enemies, and reconnect with their wayfinding ancestors.

This time around, though there are new characters in the story (which means other credible voice actors!), we are still treated to the original cast of voice actors who are all reprising their roles in Moana 2. (Fun fact: Some of these actors will also be lending their voices to the Hawaiian and Māori-language dubs of the film.)

Now, let’s take a look at some of the main characters in the story and who voices them.

‘Moana’ – Auli’i Cravalho

Voicing the titular character of the Moana franchise, American actress Auli’i will be reprising her role as the strong-willed Polynesian ‘princess’ for both the English and Hawaiian versions of the film.

Having ventured into the film and entertainment industry at the age of 16, Auli’i wowed fans worldwide when she lent her voice for the first Moana film in 2016. But what really blew fans away was Auli’i’s flawless rendition of the movie’s hit song ‘How Far I’ll Go’. The song was nominated for several awards and won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

Will Auli’i be singing again in the second movie? Let’s hope she does!

‘Maui’ – Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson’s brave, yet silly, muscular, yet goofy character is a hoot as he travels alongside Moana in search of new and exciting adventures across the ocean.

Having been a voice actor on Planet 51 and DC League of Super-Pets, the former professional wrestler will also be reprising his role as Maui in the live-action adaptation of Moana set to be released sometime next year.

‘Heihei’ – Alan Tudyk

He may be voicing the dumb rooster Heihei, but Alan is no stranger to the voice acting world.

Notable roles include King Candy (Wreck-It-Ralph), Duke of Weselton (Frozen), K-2SO (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Sonny (I,Robot) and Iago (2019’s Aladdin).

But hey, Alan really does show off his vocal strengths in Moana as he continues to channel the affable yet clueless animal that trails Moana and the rest of her group.

‘Sina’ – Nicole Scherzinger

Who would have thought that the warm and nurturing mother of Moana and supportive wife of Chief Tui would be voiced by a member of the former American girl group Pussycat Dolls?

To prepare herself for the role, Nicole said she drew back on her experiences growing up in a Hawaiian Filipino household and learned how her mum and tutu (grandmother in Hawaiian) were always the backbones of a family even though a man is considered the head of a house.

Nicole also recently made her Broadway debut in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard and has been receiving plenty of praise for her incredible acting and singing skills.

‘Chief Tui’ – Temuera Morrison

Kiwi actor Temuera is perhaps best known to many as the actor who has voiced and played Jango Fett as well as his clone son Boba Fett in the Star Wars universe.

But in Moana (for the English and Māori versions of the film), he plays formidable village chief Tui and father to Moana.

Although Temuera did not sing in the first Moana (this was done by Christopher Jackson), this time around Aquaman’s father (Temuera acts as Tom Curry) will also be singing in Moana 2!

‘Simea’ – Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda

One of the new characters introduced in Moana 2, Simea is Moana’s adoring but feisty baby sister.

Wanting to be like her elder sister and wanting to do all the things that Moana does, one can’t help but fall in love with Simea and her antics.

The character is voiced by Japanese child actress Khaleesi and we can’t wait to hear her voice acting debut!
