Providing work-experience opportunities to the future generation

By Tom Aurelius

Earlier this year; Matinée sales manager, Callum Stott, was given the opportunity to participate in an LSIP workshop at the University of Reading.

The workshop consisted of discussing, learning about, and forming workforce development collaborations that will strengthen existing ties between businesses and higher education.

Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIPs) are part of a larger Government initiative to reshape post-16 technical education and training across England, by giving local employers a voice and a forum to discuss the barriers that prevent them from hiring workers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviors.

Berkshire’s Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) has the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce (TVCC) as its authorised Employer Representative Body (ERB), as well as the Oxfordshire county’s designated ERB.

Provide opportunities for the future generation

Due to hybrid working changing the dynamic of the modern workplace, it has become more and more difficult for schools to place students in real-life work experience.

Following the success of the LSIP workshop, the management team at Matinée Multilingual decided to put our offices and on-site recording studios to good use, by providing work experience opportunities to secondary school students from Reading’s Maiden Erleigh Chiltern Edge school. Over the summer, we were able to host six students, who were all absolutely fantastic and a pleasure to host.

Be the change

Jeff Anderson, from the University of Reading’s careers department, invited Callum to provide a guest lecture to currently enrolled students. In addition, Jeff selected a number of students to attend our facilities, where they were given the opportunity to record their own vocals and sit in the hot seat of a sound engineer.

Matinée is committed to utilising our one-of-a-kind platform in order to continue assisting younger generations in entering the working world. We have been based in Reading for 40 years, during which time we have offered countless opportunities to the local workforce in order to advance their education, gain new skills, and advance their careers; many of which have gone on to pursue highly successful careers themselves.

Help shape the future

Callum will be talking at the Berkshire LSIP ‘Empowering Berkshire Businesses – The Launch of the LSIP’ Webinar this week, highlighting the experiences of hosting students at our recording studios and how our experience can serve as a platform for other businesses to do the same.

The webinar is free to view online and is due to take place on Thursday 14th September, 10am (UTC+1), make sure to tune in and see how you could help shape the future.

The webinar can be accessed here.
