Voice Over

Top-tips to consider when writing a script for voice over

By Tom Aurelius

Although it may appear easy, writing a script for voice over is more difficult than you may think. There are many factors to consider when writing a script, such as the structure, delivery style, and overall tone of the piece.

Poor script writing can lead to audience disconnect and misinterpretation, so it is important to make sure that your script captivates the audience and draws them into the intended narrative.

We’ve put together some top-tips on how to script your content effectively for voice over use, so that your next project sounds the best it can be.

Who is your audience, and what is the purpose of the script?

The first step in writing any script is to know who your audience is, and what the content of your script is trying to achieve. By doing this from the get-go, it will help guide your tone, language, and script structure.

Who will be listening to the voice over? Where are they based? What area do they work in? These are all factors to consider – as this can help determine the language required to convey your message effectively.

For example; a script for an eLearning project would require clear and concise language, authoritative yet accessible. However, a script advertising a new app to a teenage market would benefit from using more informal language, peppered with modern slang and references to recent online trends.

Authenticity is key

The key to a successful script is to keep it simple. Overusing complicated phrases and technical jargon can make the spoken dialogue difficult for your audience to process and listen to.

Making your script sound conversational is a great way to connect with an audience and capture their attention. According to research conducted by voiceovers.com, 90% of voice artists prefer this style of script writing, as they feel that their delivery comes across in a more authentic and personal way.

Make sure your script flows naturally

Keeping your script authentic does not necessarily mean that your script needs to be written in a completely casual tone, instead, ensure that it sounds natural. The flow of your script is essential, as this influences the level to which your message is understood.

Maintaining a natural speaking rhythm is a great technique for keeping listeners engaged. A good way to determine any flow problems is to read your script aloud while proofreading – through doing this, you’ll clearly be able to determine any parts that require extra work. Stumbling on your words? Your voice artist will too!

A clear format

The format and layout of your script is just as important as its contents. When it comes to recording, your chosen voice artist will appreciate the script to be presented in a clear and concise format that is easy for them to follow while in the booth.

Use an easily readable font, and include any notes on your desired tone/delivery style (especially if you are not live-directing the session). If a script does include longer words, like in a medical script, then it is extremely beneficial to write these out phonetically – this is so helpful for voice artists when recording, and helps eliminate the need for any re-records.
