Voice Artist Q&A Sessions: Anja

By Tom Aurelius

Anja is a German voice artist, who has worked on numerous projects for Matinée Multilingual over the years. Anja’s voice lends a distinct sound to all of the projects that she is part of, which our clients greatly appreciate.

We’ve asked Anja a few questions about working in the voiceover industry, her top success tips, and her day-to-day life as a voice artist.

How did you get started within the voiceover industry and what is it that you enjoy most about it?

I set up a profile on Proz.com (for subtitle translations and voiceover work) years ago, for which I recorded a few voice samples and put together a CV. I then approached some agencies and was approached by a few, so started getting my first jobs!

How would you describe a typical day of a voice artist?

I prefer to record in the mornings because my voice sounds deeper and more velvet-like. To prepare for a project, I usually read through the script several times, watch/listen to the video (if it´s a time-synced project) and then read along to practice.

I make notes for smoother reading (e.g.: where to leave a break or speed up) and then start recording. The second part of the day is dedicated to editing my recordings. My routine is not always the same, however this is often how my working day is scheduled.

What has been your favourite project that you have worked on with Matinée so far?

My favourite project that I’ve worked on was actually very small! I had to record two female character voices for an online game, which was a lot of fun! I really enjoyed working on this because I could be creative with my voice.

What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

I find it most helpful when all the technical specifications, client instructions, creative guidelines and deadline are included in one easy-to-access document and/or email.

It also helps a lot if the script has been proof-read and formatted before the session, especially if it has been formatted in a way that allows for it to be printed out.

How do live-directed sessions benefit you as opposed to recording independently?

I find that live-directed sessions are quite refreshing, and can be really helpful at times, as I am able to speak with the client directly to discuss their specifications.

I have also found that live-directed sessions can prevent the need for re-recording sections, or amending previous recordings at a later date.

Why do you like working with Matinée Multilingual?

The team at Matinée are always very friendly and co-operative! The project e-mails are clear and contain all the information that I need to get started on a project.

Whenever I have a query, replies from the team are often immediate. I also never have to worry about payments, as they are always paid on time! It is always all round a really pleasant experience working with Matinée!
