Voice Artist Q&A Sessions: Graham

By Tom Aurelius

Graham is a fantastic English voice artist, who has worked with Matinée Multilingual on a large variety of projects over the years. Graham’s warm, yet serious voice lends a distinct sound to all of the projects that he participates in, which our client’s absolutely love!

Graham has worked for a number of big names during his voice over career, including; the BBC, SKY TV, and Classic Gold. He has also provided the voice for ITV’s National Television Awards & 60 Minute Makeover, to name a few!

We’ve asked Graham some questions on working within the voiceover industry, his top tips for success in the field, and his day-to-day life as a voice artist.

How did you get started within the voiceover industry, and what is it that you enjoy most about it?

Purely by chance…  I was presenting a programme for ITV and got talking to an entertainment producer in the bar. He asked me whether I did voice-overs and would I like to try out for his new series!  I ended up as the voice on a variety of different shows for ITV and the voice-over side of my work has grown from there.

How would you describe a typical day as a voice artist?

Never dull, every job is different.

What has been your favourite project that you’ve worked on with Matinée so far?

With Matinée, I have been lucky enough to be chosen to work on several recurring jobs.  That way, I have got to know the clients and been able to deliver exactly what they wanted.  It’s been fun!

What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

For me, the most important thing is to be sent the scripts in advance.  That way, I can familiarise myself with them and check for any difficult names and/or pronunciations. I have experienced in the past, that so much studio time can be wasted when the voice-over artist is handed the script when they arrive.

How do live-directed sessions benefit you as opposed to recording independently?

It is far more fun working as part of a team in the studio.  Extra pairs of ears are useful as well to make sure that everything is exactly correct and meets the client’s expectations.

What are your top tips for somebody wanting to get started in the voiceover industry?

It is not as easy as people think it is.  Be yourself, be prepared to learn and I highly recommend working with a studio rather than trying to set up on your own.

Why do you like working with Matinée?

They’re a good bunch of people delivering a quality product without the London expense. I am always made welcome and the studios are very easy for me to get to quickly!
