Voice Artist Q&A Sessions: Jean-Noel

By Tom Aurelius

Jean-Noel is a fantastic French voice artist who has collaborated with us on a variety of projects over the course of his career. The one-of-a-kind quality that his voice brings to every project that he works on is highly valued by our clients.

We asked Jean-Noel a few questions about working in the voiceover industry, his top success tips, and his day-to-day life as a voice artist.

How did you get started within the voiceover industry and what is it that you enjoy most about it?

I started voiceover work in 2009, whilst kick-starting my translation career. My sound and voice quality were really bad back then! But I still enjoyed it very much. I love the fact that I could record from anywhere and work on many different types of projects.

Jean-Noel, how would you describe a typical day of a voice artist?

As I also do translation work, I do not record every single day. I tend to record 2-3 projects a week, which is always very exciting as every project is different. When I’m working on a voiceover project, I always start by testing the equipment in my recording booth to make sure everything sounds good before recording.

What has been your favourite project that you have worked on with Matinée so far?

I have been working on several projects aiming to teach French to beginners. I actually used to be a French teacher, so I have thoroughly enjoyed working on these projects so far!

What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

I find it particularly helpful when the timeline for delivery has been highlighted, so I am aware of the deadline that I am expected to meet. It is also useful to know ahead of time how long the script is, so I can prepare accordingly prior to the session. Of course, it is always useful to be made aware of the budget early on too.

How do live-directed sessions benefit you as opposed to recording independently?

Generally, I prefer to record independently as I feel that I perform better. However, I do understand how live-directed sessions can be beneficial to clients, especially when they have specific needs that they need the voiceover to meet.

Why do you like working with Matinée Multilingual?
