Voice Artist Q&A Sessions: Linda

By Tom Aurelius

Linda is a Brazilian Portuguese voice artist, who has provided her voice for a large number projects for us. Linda started as a successful radio DJ in Brazil; however since becoming a Mother, she has dedicated herself to a career in voiceover industry.

We asked Linda a few questions on working within the voiceover industry, her top tips for success, and her day-to-day life as a voice artist.

How would you describe a typical day as a voice artist?

As a working Mother, my day starts with taking care of the kids, dropping them to school and honestly… not much glamour. My day really starts after a cup of coffee!

In the afternoon is when the magic starts, it’s time for me to record! I always try to remember to drink enough throughout the day, so that my voice is always ready for the work I have booked, and any potential work that is coming in.

I always allow myself to finish at a decent time, so I have some time to relax in the evening before bed. I’ve found this is crucial, as a voiceover artist – our voices need rest!

What has been your favourite project that you’ve worked on with Matinée so far?

Wow, this is a difficult question… personally; I give my all to the projects although I have to say my favourite projects are live-directed sessions. I love meeting and speaking with new people, and of course chatting to the Matinée team!

Working from home can be lonely at times and I do miss having colleagues to chat with during the day, so I really enjoy when I am able to discuss a project directly with the client and/or Matinée staff. I find it really helpful discussing the client’s wants and needs for the recording, improving the script together, and listening to their preferences of style for my voiceover so I can provide the best results.

What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

Matinées guidelines are really great!

I’ve found the most useful information a client can provide is a pronunciation guide; containing tricky words, or even how to properly pronounce a brand name, as a lot of brands I work with aren’t well-known in Brazil.

How do live-directed sessions benefit you as opposed to recording independently?

As stated before, live-directed sessions are great because give me the chance to work directly with clients.

When I worked at radio stations in my city, I was used to having listeners visit of me at work every day, I even had a fan club at one point! Nowadays, working from my home studio, I really miss being able to chat with a colleague on a coffee break (away from the studio gear, of course!).

Live-directed sessions provide the opportunity to chat with the client before any recording has taken place, which I have always found very beneficial. Another positive aspect of these sessions is that all artists love to hear that they’ve done a good job on a project, and hearing this from a client at the end of a session always feels extra special.

What are your top tips for somebody wanting to get started in the voiceover industry?

In Brazil, I strongly advise that anybody wanting to start in the industry learns how to speak English, as this will ultimately create more potential work opportunities for them. I also recommend attending a course specializing in voiceover, and researching/buying high quality recording gear.

In this industry, we are learning new techniques every day with each passing client, and broadening our repertoire of interpretation. For this; I thank Matinée, as they book me for a huge variety of clients, providing me the opportunity to exercise my versatility.

Why do you like working with Matinée?

This one is easy to answer; projects always go smoothly, the communication is easy, fast and hassle free. Matinée always go above and beyond to make sure that both the client and voice artist are happy throughout the entire project process.

As previously mentioned; Matinée book me for such a variety of clients, and this has really helped me to push myself and develop my skills further. This is not only beneficial for me, but for clients too, as it means that I have such a wide range of interpretation that Matinée can count on me for anything required in Brazilian Portuguese.

Myself and Matinée have a long term working relationship, and I sincerely hope this will last for a very long time.
