Voice Artist Q&A Sessions: Marcel

Marcel is one of our German voice artists who has worked on many a project over the years for Matinée Multilingual. Marcel’s versatile, warm voice brings a unique sound to any project, which our clients love!

We have asked Marcel a few questions on what it’s like working within the voiceover industry, his top tips for success and his day-to-day life as a voice artist.

How did you get started within the voiceover industry and what is it that you enjoy most about it?

I got started as a voice artist in 2010 and it was rather coincidental! Back then, I was in drama school, and was invited by a classmate to attend a voice over session for a Russian movie called ‘Connected by Time’. I was supposed to sit in the corner, watch, and learn. However; luckily for me, the voice actor who was supposed to dub for the role didn’t show up to the session, so the director was desperately looking for a substitute.

After a round of discussions, he eventually pointed to my direction and asked me to have a go. I was incredibly nervous, but he liked the tone of my voice and the fact that I was able to learn quickly. This is how I got my very first voice over role!

Ever since that day, I’ve been in love with creating voice overs. I enjoy that it is so personal and unique. The way I speak – rough, loud, in a whisper, sexy, funny – whatever, the intention is always personal, no matter the nature of the voice over.

How would you describe a typical day of a voice artist?

When I have a voice over job I make sure to prepare as best I can before the recording session is due to take place, whether that be learning the script or making sure I am fully aware of the project’s intention for the voiceover.

I always make sure I’ve had a good night sleep, so my voice has been sufficiently rested. In the morning, I warm my voice up by doing some specific voice exercises. I have a cup of green tea in order to keep my voice clear and personally, I never eat before recording.

I also make sure that I never overthink about the character, or the lines after my original preparations, so that I deliver the lines as naturally as possible whilst in the studio.

Marcel, what has been your favourite project that you have worked on with Matinée so far?

My favourite Matinée project that I have been part of was a commercial for the chocolate brand; Reese’s, which launched in 2022 in Germany.

I was asked to record the narration for their ad campaign. The director and a lovely lady from Hamburg were with us on a call whilst recording, directing the entire session. This was one of the most challenging jobs I have ever done, but it was super fun!

What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

Well, I’d say the more information provided the better. Whenever directors share their ideas with me, that’s when I feel fully involved in a project, and that I can meet their expectations without any delay.

How do live-directed sessions benefit you as opposed to recording independently?

I definitely prefer live-directed sessions, simply because I am used to working directly with directors, producers, and publishers together.

Working within a creative atmosphere is always really helpful too, as we can all bounce ideas off of each other and feedback can be given from the client immediately.

Why do you like working with Matinée Multilingual?
