Voice Artist Q&A Sessions: Raffaella

Raffaella is a wonderful native Italian voice artist, who has worked on numerous projects for Matinée Multilingual over the years. Raffaella’s sensual, and elegant voice lends a distinct sound to all of the projects that she is part of, which our clients greatly appreciate.

Raffaella has worked for a number of big names during her voice over career, including; Bayer, Booking.com, Autodesk, Del Monte, Pimkie, and Carrefour, to name a few!

We’ve asked Raffaella some questions on working within the voiceover industry, her top tips for success in the field, and her day-to-day life as a voice artist.

How did you get started within the voiceover industry, and what is it that you enjoy most about it?

As a teenager, I became interested in the audiovisual sector after presenting a musical show on televised radio, which is something that I am still deeply passionate about! Since then, I have constantly worked on affirming my knowledge on “the magic of voice”, and have managed to develop my teenage passion in to my dream profession.

I absolutely love the working as a voice over artist; I think this is mainly due to the creative freedom that is involved in the job. I find character work particularly enjoyable, as I love the wide variety of roles that are offered to me, no two days are the same!

How would you describe a typical day as a voice artist?

Usually, my days are made up of three main components:

• Responding to emails and casting calls
• Recording time!
• Self-promotion and marketing

As mentioned, no two days are the same as a voice artist. However it is safe to assume that my days all consist of at least one of the above every day.

What has been your favourite project that you’ve worked on with Matinée so far?

I have worked on a large variety of projects with Matinée and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every single one of them.

Each project that I have been part of has been so different from the last, which is great because it broadens my experience even further. All projects I’ve voiced I have found very interesting, I often find myself having learnt something new with each project.

What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

There are a few things that I find really helpful in a project brief. The first is an overview of the specifications required for my audio files – this is so helpful to know in advance so I can make sure that before I record, my gear is set up correctly, and I am able to provide my audio in the correct format after the recording process is complete.

It is also helpful to be provided with any notes regarding specific pronunciations within the script, and the clients preferred style for the voiceover. It is good to know this information ahead of time, so I am able to rehearse before I record and meet client expectations to the best of my abilities.

What are your top tips for somebody wanting to get started in the voiceover industry?

I’d recommend to start listening to professional voices. It’s unbelievable how much you can learn from simply listening, and the techniques that you will pick up along the way might surprise you.

Enthusiasm and conviction are key – constant training will help with this. The more you keep up with it, and the more time you put in to it, the more you will improve.
