Voice Artist

Voice Artist Q&A Series: Bhrina

By Tom Aurelius

Bhrina is a brilliant voice artist that we have had the pleasure of working with for many years. Bhrina started as an actress and later discovered that her voice could be marketable, so she decided to train as a voice over artist.

Since then, Bhrina has worked on a large variety of voice over projects; from audiobooks to corporate explainers.

We’ve asked Bhrina some questions about working within the voice over industry, her top tips for success in the field, and her day-to-day life as a voice artist.

How did you get started within the voiceover industry, and what do you enjoy most about it?

I first started in the field of voice over to broaden and enhance my skillset, having already trained and worked as an actress previously.

By using the voice over training, and continually learning thereafter, I soon discovered that my warm voice was very marketable and that both voice over and acting work mutually benefited each other. In turn, this became a win-win partnership.

What I enjoy the most about working within the voice over industry is the variety of projects to which I can apply my skills; whether it be narration, corporate, eLearning, audiobooks, etc. I also always find the material that I am presented really interesting to work on.

How would you describe a typical day as a voice artist?

A typical day for me can involve any number of tasks. It depends a lot on how many projects I have been booked in for.

Usually, I start my day by doing some warm-up vocal exercises to keep my instrument and skills honed. After this, I will look into sourcing myself a few new jobs for future work, and analyse any project briefs that I have been supplied with. Then I spend a lot of the day recording content, editing my audio files, and networking within the voice over community.

What has been your favourite project that you’ve worked on with Matinée so far?

To be honest, I enjoy most projects that I work on! However, I once recorded for an Explainer video with Matinée, in an interview style. This was for Open Doors International, and it was a really memorable voice over project for me as it was for such a great cause.

What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

I always find it best when as much detail as possible has been included within the project brief. I prefer for a brief to include clear direction from the client including the aim of the voice over, the objectives of the overall project, and the desired tone of the voice over required.

As well as this, it is always helpful when I am supplied with background information on the project, such as where and when the recorded work will appear. It is always useful to be made aware of whether I will be able to be supplied with a copy of the finished recording, as I like to keep my showreel up to date.

How do live-directed sessions benefit you as opposed to recording independently?

I find live-directed sessions very beneficial because you can receive immediate feedback from the client first-hand. Not only this, but live-directed sessions allow you to fine-tune and tailor the work to the precise requirements of the client in real-time, ultimately resulting in client satisfaction once the session is complete. It is always lovely engaging with another human being during the recording too!

Recording independently can sometimes mean that the recording process takes a little longer as you are working alone, and can’t receive the feedback directly as the session is happening.

What are your top tips for somebody wanting to get started in the voiceover industry?

My biggest tip is to do your research about the industry before deciding to jump in. It’s important to be clued up on what it involves, making sure that you have the motivation, and that you can invest your time in honing your craft.

It’s also important if you are serious about a career in voice over, that you source out some training on the industry.

Why do you like working with Matinée?

I always enjoy working with Matinée as the team is lovely, easy to work with, and very helpful!
