Working with Matinée – Voice Artists

By Tom Aurelius

Here at Matinée Multilingual, we take pride in our ability to offer a top-notch service from the onset of any collaboration.

Our extensive database of readily available, pre-approved voice demos is a big reason why clients choose to cast with us for their projects. Our skilled audio engineers meticulously examine each demo before we upload them to our database to ensure audio quality is maintained at all times, and so we can provide our clients with excellent results.

Before sending in your audio demos, it is a good idea to review the list below which outlines our requirements to work with us.

You must have experience of working within the voiceover industry

It may sound easy, but recording professional voiceovers can be tricky. Therefore, it’s important that our talents are confident in the services they provide, and that they can represent themselves and Matinée sufficiently.

If you are interested in getting involved in the voiceover industry, check out our blog post on our top tips on how to get started here.

You have access to a recording studio

Whether this be a studio local to you, or you have your own home studio set-up, you must have a studio readily available to you.

When recording from a home studio, you have the freedom to take on as little, or as much work from us as you like. The more jobs you complete, and the quicker you complete them, the more likely you are to receive repeat work.

If you record from a local studio, it is beneficial for you to be aware of their rates and general studio availability ahead of time. Through doing this, you can be aware of any costs you may incur when booking in a slot to record for us.

If you live in, or are local to the Reading area, you can record in our studios here at Matinée. We have state-of-the-art recording studios on our premises, which our project management team will organise for you to record from. If you’re not tech-savvy, don’t fret, an audio engineer will be on hand and present within your recording session to take care of the technical side!

Ensure your demos are clear

When supplying us with your demos, please make sure that the below has been taken in to consideration. Any demos we receive that do not adhere to the below list will not be approved by our audio engineers:

  • Speak clearly, and at a natural pace
  • If possible, please avoid including any music or SFX in your demos
  • Do not overprocess your voice with effects – we want to hear you!
  • Your voiceover must be centered in the mix, not panned to one side
  • Avoid using reverb, delay, or modulation effects

Provide us with a variety of demo styles

No two days are ever the same at Matinée. Each project is different from the last, so the broader the variety of demo styles we have to hand, the more work you could potentially be booked for! A few examples of differing styles are:

  • Corporate
  • eLearning
  • IVR
  • Character reels
  • Narration

How to meet our audio specifications

When providing us with your demos, or audio for a project, it is imperative that our audio specifications are followed. Our audio specs can be found below:

  • File format should be: WAV, 16 or 24 bit, PCM, 44.1KHz, MONO
  • Audio should be recorded in the above format, rather than converted after

Audio should be clean and free from:

  • Sounds or background noise other than the voice
  • Room echo and reflections
  • Clipping (over level)
  • Dropouts, glitches or any other artifacts
  • Unusually loud plosives or sibilance

Recording guidelines:

  • Use minimal processing to achieve sensible levels
  • Volume and timbre should be consistent throughout, keep microphone position consistent
  • Check audio files thoroughly before sending to ensure the above

Let’s keep it professional

Over the years, we have formed some fantastic working relationships with our regular voice artists; built on trust, respect and understanding from both sides.

We require our voice over artists to meet the following expectations. In exchange, we promise to always be transparent about our expectations of you, the purpose of the project, and the intended publication location:

  • You show up to recording sessions on time
  • You communicate with us clearly
  • You respond to our project management team quickly
  • You do not make falsifications about your experience within the industry
  • You are happy to sign an NDA agreement when required
  • You never behave in an unprofessional manner

Providing high-quality voice over services is the foundation of our business; therefore, it is in our nature to foster positive, supportive, and professional working relationships with our voice talents, in order to benefit both parties.
