Voice Over Artist Q&A Series: Ingrid

By Matinée Multilingual

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, people were affected in so many ways, including losing their jobs. So, when Ingrid W was also let go by her former employer – she decided to create a home recording studio so that she could give voice over a try. The rest, as they say it, is history! Let’s read on to know more about the versatile English voice artist and how she is settling into the voice over industry.

1. How did you get started in the voice over industry, and what do you enjoy most about it?

I trained as an actor many years ago and worked in TV, radio and theatre. I then went on to teach drama at my daughter’s primary school and also taught children with speech difficulties, both of which I loved. However, during the Covid-19 lockdown period, I was made redundant and decided to create a studio at home to give voice over a try; within a few weeks I had my first few clients, and I have never looked back.

2. How would you describe a typical day as a voice artist?

Vocal warm up and a bit of stretching, checking emails for any urgent jobs or auditions and then into my studio. I like to take regular breaks to keep fresh, so I take my dog out for lots of small walks. It helps to then go back to the studio and listen to things to hear them again in a new light, rethinking how the audience might hear it and redoing it if necessary.

3. What is the best kind of project brief to receive? Is there any information that you find particularly helpful to be included before a project takes place?

I think my favourites are character roles, it doesn’t matter what, I just love creating a persona and bringing them to life, I especially love real life people roles to move the audience, be it funny, sad or serious. It is my favourite type of work. Clear direction is hugely important, and the ability to ask the client for more information to make sure we are all on the same page. I also love narration for a powerful video!

4. How do live-directed sessions benefit you as opposed to recording independently?

I love live sessions. It means the client gets what they want and there’s less room for error.

5. What are your top tips for somebody wanting to get started in the voiceover industry?

It helps to have some kind of training in acting, take some classes, listen to lots of voice actors and figure out what you like about them (or maybe what you don’t like!) practice, practice and practice more, find a great voice over tutor to guide you, and make sure you have fun with it and never stop learning.

6. What are your thoughts on AI voiceovers and has this affected your work thus far?

It’s a scary prospect for voice artists, however I don’t think AI can ever quite capture the true emotion and passion that a human voice can deliver. I am not sure if it has affected my work … but I guess I don’t really know what jobs have been taken that may have come my way.
