French Closed Captions Case Study

French Closed Captions (subtitles) – GE Healthcare

GE Healthcare required a French subtitling (closed captions) translation for a compliance training video aimed at their Channel Partners. Within the video, Laura O’Donnell, the chief compliance officer at GE Healthcare, advises on the ethical responsibility that members of the healthcare industry have to the government, their patients, and colleagues.

As a leading French subtitling company, we were selected as their partner to create and produce the subtitles for this content. The first step was to create the English time-coded transcription, in preparation for our French linguist to translate the audio in to French for subtitle purposes.

Once the English transcription had been created, we passed this on to our French linguist with a set of full instructions, to ensure that they adhered to our subtitle guidelines when translating in to French.

Once the French translation had been approved by our client, our talented in-house engineers synced the subtitles to the video and burnt these in to an MP4 file, ready to be delivered to our client.

We had the pleasure of recording with Matinée linking up from London for an animation project. Everything went brilliantly with our voice actor in the studio, whilst we connected from London. I highly recommend the engineers and professional expertise of Matinée. Great technical session with smooth communication. We hope to work with the studio in the near future.

We (Westhill Communications) recently worked with Matinee Multilingual on a Portuguese voiceover recording for an animation, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. They came recommended by a colleague, and it’s easy to see why. Even with our modest budget, they went above and beyond to deliver a result that blew us away.
Kayleigh, who managed our project, was an absolute star. She was so friendly and professional, always keeping us in the loop without overwhelming us with too much information. We got regular updates, a great selection of voiceover artists to choose from, and all the key details we needed, it was just the right balance of communication.
The whole process was smooth, easy, and completely stress-free. Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for better service. If you need translations, editing, or voiceover recordings, we’d recommend Matinee in a heartbeat. Huge thanks to Kayleigh and the team for doing such a brilliant job!

Matinée Multilingual has done an outstanding job sourcing voice talent and recording voiceovers for 20 language versions of an animated health education video. I’ve particularly appreciated their persistence in identifying voice actors for some less common languages (Rohingya, Karen, Khmer) that they originally thought they would not be able to deliver. They have been responsive, flexible, patient throughout a long process. And most importantly, Matinée has consistently provided top quality voice recordings. I would not hesitate to work with Matinée again on future projects.

Matinée have excellent communication from initial enquiry to project close. They delivered on time after we had changed our requirements and the quality of the narrations we asked for was exceptional in both English and Cymraeg. If we have future audio recording needs we would ask for their services again.

French Subtitling Production Made Simple

Closed caption services

A complete package of subtitling services, tailored to make the process stress free

  1. Transcription – we create a script we can work from, with timecodes added, to identify exactly where each subtitle appears in the video
  2. Translation – when required we can organise translation into your target languages. We take care here, as the translated text must be shortened to fit the available space on screen
  3. Subtitle creation – once the translations have been agreed, we’ll synchronise the on-screen text with the visual cues on screen. We can also translate and edit non-spoken titles and captions that appear on-screen if required.

Everything you never needed to know about the French

Where’s the letter W?
The letter W doesn’t exist in French. There are no French words with W in them. If you see a word such as WIFI or WC, it’s because the word has been borrowed from English.

France has 75 regional languages
Before France became the official language of France there were all kinds of regional languages including the Celtic language, Gaulish. Now France has 75 regional languages spread across the country including Parisian, Bourguignon and gascon.

French words in the kitchen are used all over the world
France is known for its cooking and many French words have been borrowed to be used in other languages especially those referring to food preparation. Words like cuisine, chef, julienne and sauteing are all French words used by chefs and cooks almost everywhere.

Tourism is big business
If countries make money out of tourism, then France is surely very rich. That’s because it is the most visited country in the world. Every year over 89,000 visitors come to France to sample the food, fine wine, history, and culture. Paris is a favourite destination, and the Eiffel Tower is of course one of their most treasured monuments.

Snails are a delicacy
The French love food and one of their favourite dishes are snails which in French is called Escargot. You can eat them as an appetiser at a bar served with a juice in small glasses. Or you can have them in a restaurant cooked with garlic and butter.

Travelling snails
Talking about snails I bet you didn’t know that you can’t carry live snails on a train in France without a ticket. So you must remember if you’re carrying less than 5 kilos of snails there must be a ticket for you and a ticket for the snails.

King for 20 minutes!
Louis the XIX was crowned King after his father abdicated. But the poor man obviously didn’t fancy the job because about 20 minutes later he abdicated too.

Don’t put the bread the wrong way up
It’s supposed to be unluck in France if you put bread on the table upside down. The superstition arose in the middle ages when the town executioner would pick up his loaf from the baker who would hang the bread upside down. People then related upside down bread with death and misfortune.

Take a selfie
If you love taking pictures with your phone you have a Frenchman to thank. A Parisian called Philippe Kahn invented the camera phone in 1997 and the rest as they say is history.

Kisses at the station
In 1910 the French introduced a law that prevented couples from kissing on a train platform. It was supposed to ease overcrowding. The law doesn’t exist any longer which must be a relief for couples who want to part with a romantic smooch on the platform.

English to French subtitling service

French is a Romance language like Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. It is spoken by around 338 million people and in Europe it is the third most spoken language after English and German. It is also the official language of 28 other countries, which include Canada, Switzerland, Gabon and Chad. French speakers can also be found in places such as Jersey, French Polynesia and Tunisia due to French colonisation in the past.

In Africa, there is a large majority of French speakers, either of a first or second language and French is said to be the fastest growing language on the continent.

From the 17th century French was used as a diplomatic language and this only changed in the 20th century when it was replaced by English. Sub Saharan Africa speaks French, but the dialect is difficult for other French speakers to understand. However, written French is very similar to that found in France and other French speaking countries.

Canada has a large majority of French speakers, both as a first and second language. It is the only official language in Quebec, whereas other provinces share the language with English at federal level. In the United States, French is said to be the fourth most popular language after English, Chinese and Spanish. French today is one of the most important diplomatic languages.

The film industry is becoming increasingly globalised, and as a result, the subject of whether films should be dubbed or subtitled for audiences in other countries is becoming more and more common.
