Ethics at Electrolux – Vietnamese Closed Captions (subtitles)

Electrolux required a subtitling (closed captions) company to assist them with Vietnamese subtitling services for their “Ethics at Electrolux” video.

Matinée transcribed the English audio and produced the Vietnamese subtitles. The Vietnamese subtitles were synced to the video and burnt-in to a .wmv video file. We were restricted to a 15Mb file size, and optimizing the encoding settings was very important to ensure the Vietnamese subtitles were still legible.

English to Vietnamese subtitling service

Vietnamese is an Austroasiatic language and it is spoken by around 82 million people living in Vietnam. You will also hear it in places where there are migrant communities such as China, Cambodia, Laos, Canada, France and Australia.

Written Vietnamese first used a script called Chu-nom for writing and this was influenced by Chinese. This was created by Buddhist scholars and priests. Nowadays, the Latin language is used which was introduced by roman catholic missionaries.

The earliest text by Vietnamese writers in written in Chinese. However, from the 13th century onwards, texts were written in Chu-Nom and there are some highly thought of literary works written, using this language. In the 20th century Quoc Ngu became popular which was influenced by French and it is the language used today in educational establishments, in newspapers, TV and radio.

There are three main Vietnamese dialects. They correspond with Northern Vietnam, which is Hanoi, Central Vietnam which is Hue and Southern Vietnam which is Ho Chi Minh City. Northern Vietnamese from Hanoi is considered to be the basis of the standard language. They do have some differences in pronunciation and vocabulary, but they can be understood by all Vietnamese speakers.
