If you are a translation company, we will send you some helpful guidelines when providing us with copy or scripts, and we can either work from your translations or handle the whole project for you, including translation. If you are a production company, we will provide translations or subtitles in your preferred format; whether that’s subtitle-ready files (XML or PNG), or burnt in as fully-subtitled videos. Voiceover recordings can be supplied as edited files, or we can remix with the original music and effects and provide a finished video, ready to go.

A short history on the Telugu language

Telugu belongs to the South-Central branch of the Dravidian family of languages. It is the largest member of the Dravidian language family, and its closest relative is Kannada.

Telugu split from Proto-Dravidian around 1000-1500 BCE. The earliest attested written records of the language date back to the late 6th century, although there have been proposed traces that pre-date this by some way. Telugu literature began in the 11th century, with a version of the Hindu epic ‘Mahabharata’. The influence of Sanskrit and Prakrit became evident from this time.

The Telugu script is derived from a version of the Brahmi alphabet of ancient India, which was used for both Telugu and Kannada. This split into two separate alphabets sometime between the 12th and 15th centuries. During the second half of the 20th century, a new written standard was established, based on the modern spoken language.

Telugu is one of India’s 22 scheduled languages, and is official in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

How many people speak Telugu as their first language?

It is estimated that approximately 75 million people speak Telugu as their first language – mainly in Andhra Pradesh. It is also spoken in the neighbouring states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh.

Telugu is the third most spoken language in the Indian subcontinent (after Hindi and Bengali).

• Telugu has four distinct regional dialects, and three different social dialects, used according to context (in relation to education, class and caste).

The Indian economy

India’s economy is the tenth largest in the world by nominal GDP and the third largest by PPP. India is the 19th largest exporter and the 10th largest importer in the world.

Due to its large population there is still a lot of poverty in the country, despite its economic success. Although India has a growing high-tech sector, around half of the population is employed in agriculture (plus forestry, logging and fishing).

Around 22% of the population work in industry (which accounts for 26% of the GDP), and 27% in the service sector. Over 20 million people work in textile manufacturing.

India was one of the founding members of the World Trade Organisation’s precursor, and is a member of the G20 and BRICS (the association of five major emerging economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
