English Canadian Voice Over for Man In Your Head Productions

Man in your head Productions were producing a promo for OceanaGold, about modern underground mining at the Fraser’s Underground Mine in New Zealand. They needed help from a voice-over agency to cast a suitable Canadian voice-over narrator.

Matinée Multilingual has done an outstanding job sourcing voice talent and recording voiceovers for 20 language versions of an animated health education video. I’ve particularly appreciated their persistence in identifying voice actors for some less common languages (Rohingya, Karen, Khmer) that they originally thought they would not be able to deliver. If you are a translation company, we will send you some helpful guidelines for providing us with copy or scripts, as they will need to be formatted correctly for voicing or for subtitling. If you are a production company, we can organise translations and create the subtitles in your preferred format. Voiceover recordings can be supplied as edited files, or we can remix with the original music and effects and layback to complete the new video soundtrack, ready to go.

Origins of the Canadian language and accent

Canada stretches from the United States to the Arctic Circle. Most people in Canada speak English or French, or both. The official language of Canada is English, apart from Quebec, where it is French and New Brunswick where both languages are official.

Canada’s first inhabitants were native people, mainly Eskimos, but in 1497 John Cabot, who was an Italian in the service to England’s Henry VII, discovered Canada. The French then came in the 1500s and various battles were fought between them and the English for certain territories. Finally, in the 17th century, the English gained control. Up to this time the majority of the settlers were French speakers, but after Britain gained control, thousands of Britons came to Canada to settle. The biggest impact on language however, was the American Revolution. After the Americans beat the English and gained independence, there were people who wanted to remain English and the Canadians invited them to settle in Canada and gave them land. This meant that there was now a mixture of British English speakers and American speakers in Canada. Immigrants also came from Ireland and the Ukraine.

Written Canadian is British, but with an American influence. Some spelling is British, like colour with a ‘u’ and some words are spelt in American English, like analyse with a ‘z’ and not an ‘s.’ There are also words in the Canadian vocabulary which are not English, French or American and which have evolved frm their own language.

Canadians sound more American than English and this may be because of the proximity to the United States, but the language has definitely been influenced by English, which can be heard in their pronunciation of some consonants and vowel shifts. A famous Canadian singer is Michael Buble, hear him talking in a Canadian accent here. It is a good example of someone speaking English with a Canadian accent.
