Origins of the Czech language and accent

Czech is said to have originated from a place called Bohemia, which was home to the Boli Tribe. They inhabited the area from the first century AD. The language they spoke was called Bohemian and it kept that name until the early 20th century, when it was changed to Czech.

The Bohemian language was prohibited after the Thirty Years War. This was caused by the Bohemian government insisting only Czech speaking residents could become full citizens or inherit land or goods. After the war, people began to use German as their main language.

However, during the 18th century Czech was once again revived, mainly by Czech historians and philologists. Changes were made to the language in order to distinguish it from Slovak and a Czech standard was created. Slovak speakers can understand the Czech language, since both countries used to be part of Czechoslovakia before its dissolution.

There are approximately 13 different dialects of the Czech language. In Prague they speak what is called ‘common’ Czech which has differences to standard Czech in pronunciation and sound. The Czech vocabulary is mainly influenced by Slavic and Baltic, but it does contain loan words from German, Greek, Russian and Latin. More recently, Modern loan words have come from English, especially in regard to new technology.

There are several dialects in the Czech language, most are mutually intelligible and are spoken by people living in the more remote areas. Moravian is a dialect spoken in the Moravia and Silesia areas although they are sometimes said to be dialects of Slovak, rather than Czech.
