Chinese Voice Over Case Study (Mandarin)

Chinese Mandarin voice-over recording – Albion

Albion Valves are a UK based manufacturer of valves and pipe fittings. To better explain their services, they contracted Fat Free Media to produce a promotional video that they could use at trade shows, events and online. Although Albion Valves are predominantly focused on the UK Air Conditioning market, they were seeing an increase in demand from overseas, including China.

They also tasked FFM with localising the video into Chinese Mandarin. FFM turned to us for help with translating the scripts and producing the voice-over. We cast Mandarin voice-artist Zhenyu to narrate the video. We recorded the script wild (not timed to video) and delivered the finished audio track to FFM. They adjusted the video to match the Mandarin voice-over. We think the finished video looks great, but could have benefited further by localising the on-screen text / captions as well.

We had the pleasure of recording with Matinée linking up from London for an animation project. Everything went brilliantly with our voice actor in the studio, whilst we connected from London. I highly recommend the engineers and professional expertise of Matinée. Great technical session with smooth communication. We hope to work with the studio in the near future.

We (Westhill Communications) recently worked with Matinee Multilingual on a Portuguese voiceover recording for an animation, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. They came recommended by a colleague, and it’s easy to see why. Even with our modest budget, they went above and beyond to deliver a result that blew us away.
Kayleigh, who managed our project, was an absolute star. She was so friendly and professional, always keeping us in the loop without overwhelming us with too much information. We got regular updates, a great selection of voiceover artists to choose from, and all the key details we needed, it was just the right balance of communication.
The whole process was smooth, easy, and completely stress-free. Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for better service. If you need translations, editing, or voiceover recordings, we’d recommend Matinee in a heartbeat. Huge thanks to Kayleigh and the team for doing such a brilliant job!

Matinée Multilingual has done an outstanding job sourcing voice talent and recording voiceovers for 20 language versions of an animated health education video. I’ve particularly appreciated their persistence in identifying voice actors for some less common languages (Rohingya, Karen, Khmer) that they originally thought they would not be able to deliver. They have been responsive, flexible, patient throughout a long process. And most importantly, Matinée has consistently provided top quality voice recordings. I would not hesitate to work with Matinée again on future projects.

Matinée have excellent communication from initial enquiry to project close. They delivered on time after we had changed our requirements and the quality of the narrations we asked for was exceptional in both English and Cymraeg. If we have future audio recording needs we would ask for their services again.

The Chinese have a lot of superstitions. Unlike here in the west, they relate the colour white and not black to death and bad luck. They don’t like green much either as that could mean your husband or wife has been unfaithful. The number 6 is a lucky number in Chinese. It means prosperity and happiness.

Kentucky Fried Chicken is popular in China
Kentucky Fried Chicken have restaurants in China, but when they first opened, they made a terrible error translating their slogan ‘Finger lickin’ good’ – the powers that be thought it could be translated word for word (sometimes this can’t be done) and it came out as “we’ll eat your fingers off” which didn’t go down too well with Kentucky’s Chinese customers.

Tiananmen, representing Chinese voice-over language history

A short history on the Chinese Mandarin language

Mandarin Chinese is spoken throughout China north of the Yangtze river. It is the native language of two thirds of the total Chinese population. It is taught in schools both in northern China and on islands like Hong Kong, where their mother tongue is actually Cantonese.

The language is divided up into four groups and depend on which areas people come from as to what type of Mandarin they speak. For example, in Beijing, they speak northern Mandarin, whilst in Sichuan they speak southwestern Mandarin. The people of China refer to the Mandarin language as Putonghua, in Taiwan they call it Guayu and in the Philippines they say Huayu.

Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that it is important to get the intonation of word right, in order for the meaning to be conveyed correctly.

Mandarin is the official language of the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan and is also included in one of the four official languages of Singapore, along with English, Malay and Tamil.

The English word for tea, which people sometimes call cha, comes from the Chinese Chá meaning tea. One of the most famous Chinese teachers is Confucius, who wrote many philosophical quotes which are still used today.
