We can add translation, voiceover and subtitling to your company’s offering, which will appear seamless to your clients and yet mesh easily with the processes in your own departments.

If you are a translation company, we will send you some helpful guidelines when providing us with copy or scripts, and we can either work from your translations or handle the whole project for you, including translation. If you are a production company, we will provide translations or subtitles in your preferred format; whether that’s subtitle-ready files (XML or PNG), or burnt in as fully-subtitled videos. Voiceover recordings can be supplied as edited files, or we can remix with the original music and effects and provide a finished video, ready to go.

A short history on the Slovak language

Slovak belongs to the Western Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family, along with Czech, Polish and Sorbian. It derives directly from Proto-Slavic.

Slovak is very similar to – and mutually intelligible with – Czech, although the two languages developed separately for a long period. Slovak also shares common features with both South Slavic and East Slavic languages, so although it is classified as West Slavic, it actually occupies a more central position within the Slavic language group.

There was an intense period of development of the Slovak language during the 10th to 12th centuries, before it stabilised between the 13th and 15th centuries. However, there was no standard Slovak literary language until the end of the 18th century. Before this Czech was used as the literary language of educated Slovaks, as well as cultural West Slovak, cultural Central Slovak and cultural East Slovak. Eventually a standard version based on Central Slovak caught on, and formed the basis of the literary version used today.

Which countries have Slovak as a national language?

Slovak has been the official language of the Slovak Republic since it became an independent state in 1993.

The language also has official status in the Serbian region of Vojvodina, and is recognised as a minority language in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Ukraine.

How many people speak Slovak as their first language?

It is estimated that around six million people speak Slovak worldwide, most of whom live in the Slovak Republic. There are significant Slovak-speaking communities in the United States and the Czech Republic.

• Slovak is sometimes called the ‘Esperanto’ of Slavic languages, because of its central position within the group as the most comprehensible language for speakers of other Slavic languages.
• While this is true for standard Slovak, it doesn’t always follow for Slovak dialects, which can be much more difficult for others to understand – particularly the eastern varieties.

Slovakia has a high income economy, with the highest GDP of the V4 countries (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary). If the V4 countries were counted as a single nation, they would rank as the seventh largest economy in Europe and the 14th largest in the world.

Slovakia joined the European Union in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2009.
